The Sermon on the Mount , Matthew 5-7 is really "The Magna Charta of the Kingdom," or the  "The Manifesto of the King." it is the essence of all that Jesus ever preached.

Jesus calls us “the salt of the earth” This analogy speaks of preservation, purity, healing, flavour . Salt is pleasant and flavouring, but there is obviously a sting in the healing presence of salt. Why did Jesus not call us the “honey of the earth”?  Food without salt is insipid and distasteful, and a world without Christ is insipid and distasteful. How is the presence of Jesus to be stirred into the world to flavour it?

Jesus also said “you are the light of the world”, and he said “I am the light of the world”. Which is it – was he contradicting himself?

Why did he say that we are light? On Sunday we will be digging into these two statements that Jesus made and grappling further with the deeply radical and challenging things that Jesus said in this Sermon on the Mount.
