1 Samuel 17

The David and Goliath story may be the most famous in all Scripture. The David and Goliath story gets referenced all the time in culture, in movies, songs, and on the news. It's the story of an underdog who emerges victorious against impossible odds.

But do you think there is more to the story than just a message about a boy who beat a giant? Do you think God has more to say to us in this story than 'Face your giants, don't be intimidated, you can do it!' This story is often reduced to a helpful analogy for self-help and a motivator to have courage in the face of impossible odds.

Read 1 Samuel 17 this weekend. As you read, ask God to speak to you through His Word. What lessons might He want to teach us through His word? Why do you think David had the confidence to face Goliath while terror seized more experience warriors? Yes, David beat his giant, but this story is not about David. David was a part of God's larger story; David was a part of God's plan for His people Israel.

When you think of Goliath today, what comes to mind? Do you have obstacles in your life that remind you of a Goliath? Now think bigger. Is there a Goliath standing against the church of Jesus? What do we learn from David about trusting God?

Here is something to chew on. As I've pondered this story, I have come to believe that David had a view of God that differed from how others viewed God. David knew God. David was aware of God's grandeur, power, and bigness. Goliath was tiny in comparison to God. For those who didn't know God, Goliath looked huge. But David knew God, so Goliath seemed puny.

Do you see God the way David did? Do you see God's grandeur, His bigness, His power?
